TIPS AND TRICKS
How To Set Boundries With Your Boss.

Tip #1: Ground yourself in ethics. The old adage, "Stand for something or you'll fall for anything," applies here. If you lack a clear understanding of what you will or will not do in your position, you leave it up to your boss or your company to establish the prevailing value system. Yes, you want to advance your career, social status and financial opportunity, but at what cost? You should have a clear understanding of your work and personal values. When this is in place, demands or requests that are passed down from an unethical boss are easily identified and graciously denied. Having your own set of work ethics can range from having an established time that you turn your Blackberry off to, "No, I will not offer bribes for my boss's advancement!" Be clear about your ethics.

Tip #2: Be realistic about your professions duties. If you are an accountant, thinking that you will skate out of the office at 5 p.m. January through April is unrealistic. Long hours are required for accountants, especially during tax season. Equally, lawyers, physicians or management consultants are a few professions where a clear understanding of your job's long hours is required to be successful and happy. Review the job description of your position. Know what is expected in your position for you to be considered successful. Your job duties should be outlined and reviewed with your boss, not just prior to hire, but on a regular basis. Performance reviews are not only an opportunity to see how you are doing, but to bring attention to additional duties you may be carrying or how you would like to see your position evolve.

Tip #3: Communicate your needs. Having a value system in place does no good if it is kept to yourself. This does not mean posting a list of your top 10 "Will not do's" outside your cubicle. It means establishing boundaries, sometimes subtle, sometimes overt, that communicate your priorities. For example, if working late on Thursdays is preventing you from attending a treasured school activity of your child's, offer to switch to another day or come in early. Simply stating "I won't work late on Thursdays" shows poor flexibility. Presenting your employer with an issue and a self-identified solution demonstrates your willingness to be a team player, yet still have your needs met. Your boss will not know what your needs are unless you communicate them. Communicate your needs in terms of solutions rather than problems. It is easier to grant an employee a favor or offer flexibility if the employee is seen as a productive, valued member of the team.

Tip #4: Learn to say no. A heavy workload, nonstop texts, emails or phone calls all are paths to quick on-the-job burnout. According to the consulting firm Stress Directions, which tracks organizational stress, employee stress is being recognized as a major drain on corporate productivity and competitiveness more than ever before. When an employee feels violated, taken advantage of and overworked, the likelihood that they will be productive is slim. In addition, accepting work that realistically you can not complete or taking late-night phone calls or incessant texts and emails contributes to your own unhappiness. Learning to say no and set priorities curbs job burnout and stress. If you're uncomfortable standing up to your boss or establishing open dialogue, enroll in assertiveness classes, practice on a co-worker or friend or write your thoughts down. Gain your gumption tactfully and diplomatically.

Tip #5: Know your rights. According to Working America, an online community run by the AFL-CIO union, each worker is entitled to basic legal rights: a safe environment, overtime pay, equal pay, a workplace free from discrimination and a healthy balance of work and family time, including the rights outlined in the Family and Medical Leave Act. The Family and Medical Leave Act grants employees the right to time off due to pregnancy, adoption or certain medical conditions. A law enacted to protect the balance between work and family, the FMLA has changed the way employers treat their employees' work and personal lives. In addition to knowing your rights, be familiar with your industry's guidelines and laws that govern your profession. For example, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 outlines specific mandates and requirements for the accounting and financial practitioners. Other examples include the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians or the Code of Ethics for lawyers guided by each states bar association code, or your state's department of regulation which produces standards for various professions ranging from hair stylists to teachers. Knowing your industry's guiding principles relinquishes the power of establishing an ethics system to a higher authority -- one above your boss.

ASK TINA

Q:submitted by: Devon.

Hi Tina, Alright so alot of people say the quote "you shouldn't have sex 8 days before and after your period". Why do people say it? Is it true that you shouldnt? What happens if you have sex while your girlfriend has her period?

A:
Dear Devon, People say you shouldn't have sex on those days since you'll have a high chance of getting your girlfriend preggos. The most mature and responsible thing to do though is to use condoms for yourself and birth control for her, unless you want to be changing diapers in the near future buddy. Sex while your girlfriend is going through her period is pretty great for the both of you. Youll be relieving her menstrual pain and its a quick natural lubrication. Just make sure its not the first day of her period, it can get messy. Also, women are often hornier during this time so try to take advantage of that! Good Luck Babe!

-Tina

STRANGE NEWS HEADLINES
Police say that officers searching for a man wanted on methamphetamine charges found him hiding neck-deep in a liquid manure pit at a northeastern Indiana farm. Noble County sheriff's deputies thought they'd lost 52-year-old Thomas Hovis Jr. until an officer spotted him in the tank beneath an outbuilding floor on the farm near Albion. Chief Deputy Doug Harp says Hovis had been neck-deep in the combination of hog and dog feces for at least an hour Tuesday evening. He later became combative and had to be shocked twice with a stun gun. Hovis was treated at a hospital for hypothermia before he being taken to jail. A Steuben County magistrate on Wednesday ordered him held without bail because he missed court hearings in February and March.
